President of South Korea Calls on Japan to Reflect on the Past

  • Lee Jae-myung urged Japan to consider its colonial history.
  • The President of South Korea plans to meet with the Japanese Prime Minister.
  • Tensions remain in the relations between South Korea and North Korea.

President of South Korea Lee Jae-myung in his speech on Liberation Day, August 15, called on Japan to reflect on its colonial history, emphasizing the importance of future cooperation. This day marks the 80th anniversary of the end of Japanese colonial rule. Lee noted that many South Koreans still feel the burden of past injustices, and unresolved historical issues hinder the development of bilateral relations.

"We must remember the memories of those who suffered under Japanese colonial rule, hoping that one day Korea and Japan will become true neighbors," he said in his address, highlighting the importance of cooperation with Japan for economic development.

Lee also reaffirmed his intention for "swift diplomacy" with Tokyo, including mutual visits and negotiations with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. He plans to meet with him on August 23.

However, tensions between South Korea and Japan remain due to historical disputes, such as the use of wartime labor and the issue of "comfort women." South Korean courts have ruled in favor of victims, but Tokyo asserts that all compensations were settled under the 1965 agreement.

Currently, President Lee promised to build "military trust" with North Korea, despite recent statements from Pyongyang about the lack of interest in improving relations. Lee expressed hope that North Korea would respond to the calls from South Korea regarding the restoration of trust and dialogue.

On the holiday of liberation, South Korea also honored war victims, pledging to expand compensation for their families. Lee called for political reforms within the country, expressing regret over the influence of divisive politics based on outdated ideologies.
