Price Increase of Mounjaro Impacts Accessibility for Patients

The price of Mounjaro, which is used for the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes, is set to rise in Great Britain. Eli Lilly announced that prices for the medication will increase by 170% starting in March 2025, following pressure from the administration of President Donald Trump.

From next month, the monthly cost of Mounjaro will rise from £122 to £330. This increase only affects private patients, as prices for NHS patients will remain unchanged. It is expected that nearly 240,000 patients will gain access to Mounjaro through the NHS during its first three years of introduction.

According to Professor Clare Anderson, president of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, the price increase could make the medication unaffordable for some individuals who already face financial difficulties. She also emphasized the necessity of making Mounjaro available only in pharmacies registered in Great Britain to avoid counterfeit products. Incorrect dosages or unsafe substances could pose serious health risks.

Moreover, analysts indicate that existing NHS recommendations regarding body mass index (BMI) may exclude up to 3 million people in Great Britain, as they do not take into account ethnic minorities, which affect the risk of developing complications.

These changes have prompted Eli Lilly to adjust prices in response to other developed countries, which, according to the company, is necessary to reduce prices in the USA.
