Trump to Discuss Economic Issues with Putin in Alaska

  • Trump and Putin will meet in Alaska to discuss the conflict in Ukraine.
  • Russia plans to discuss economic ties and the lifting of sanctions.
  • Trade relations between the USA and Russia have significantly decreased since sanctions were imposed.

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet in Anchorage, Alaska, on September 15, 2025.

The purpose of the meeting is to try to resolve the three-year conflict in Ukraine. Trump expressed hope that Putin is ready to agree to a ceasefire. However, his proposal for a possible division of territory between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has sparked concern in Kyiv.

Russia is trying to link the discussion of the war with other bilateral issues, including the lifting of economic ties with the USA. Russian officials have expressed hope that the meeting will lead to the development of cooperation in the trade and economic sphere.

According to the data, the Russian delegation will include Finance Minister Anton Siluanov and Putin's special representative on investment issues, Kirill Dmitriev. This indicates an intention to discuss economic issues during the meeting.

Trade relations between the USA and Russia have significantly decreased since sanctions were imposed: trade volume has decreased by 90% since 2021. In 2021, total trade volume was $36.1 billion, of which $6.4 billion was US exports to Russia, and $29.7 billion was imports from Russia.

After the sanctions were imposed, most Russian goods were redirected to China. For example, in 2022 and 2023, trade relations between China and Russia grew by 30% year-on-year.

Putin may also propose to Trump cooperation in the field of rare metals, where Russian reserves are estimated at 3.8 million tons. This issue has become relevant in the context of global competition for these resources, including with China.

Trump, in turn, threatens new sanctions against countries that continue to trade with Russia, such as India. If negotiations in Alaska do not yield results, additional tariffs may be imposed.
