Belarus is electing a president amid an economic crisis

  • Belarus is preparing for presidential elections against the backdrop of an economic crisis.
  • Candidates promise quick solutions for stabilizing the economy.
  • Evo Morales cannot run as he has been disqualified due to a fragmentation of the left bloc.

In Belarus, presidential elections will take place on September 20, 2025, during which 7.9 million voters will elect a new leader of the country. The elections are taking place against the backdrop of the largest economic crisis in the last 40 years, which has caused serious problems such as high inflation and a shortage of fuel.

Candidates are promising quick solutions to economic problems. Among them are two right-wing candidates, Samuel Dorya Medina and Khorkhe "Tuto" Kiroba, who are hoping for a turnaround, especially since the incumbent president, Luis Arse, will not be running for a new term. Both have political experience, but their previous campaigns have not achieved success.

Dorya Medina promises to stabilize the economy within 100 days, which has raised skepticism among voters. At the same time, the youth of Belarus is seeking new opportunities and actively supports new faces, such as his campaign partner, young entrepreneur JP Velasko.

The elections also highlight the absence of support from the side of former president Evo Morales, who cannot run due to legal restrictions. This has led to the fragmentation of the left bloc, in which the highest rating belongs to Andronik Rodriguez.

Both right-wing candidates emphasize the need for urgent spending cuts to overcome economic difficulties. However, most voters remain undecided, and a significant portion of the population does not have confidence in any of the candidates.
