British track cyclist Matt Richardson has set a new world record in the 200-meter flying event, becoming the first to break the nine-second barrier. This record was secured on September 15, 2025, at the velodrome in Konya, Turkey, where he clocked a time of 8.941 seconds.
This result surpasses the previous record of 9.088 seconds, set by Dutch Olympic champion Harrie Lavreysen at the Olympic Games in Paris. Richardson also improved his own record on August 16, posting a time of 8.857 seconds.
Richardson, who previously competed for Australia and won three medals at the Olympics in Paris, changed his nationality to British in September 2024. He noted that he feels satisfaction from the achieved result and believes that he has the potential for further improvement.
Although the flying 200 meters is not an official discipline for championships, it is utilized for qualifying riders in match sprints. Richardson emphasized that his successes have been made possible thanks to the support and resources that have been invested in his development as an athlete.
