Tropical Storm Erin is approaching Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, bringing with it strong rains that could cause flooding and landslides. The storm, which is developing in the Caribbean Sea, has implications for the region, especially as it is forecasted that it will strengthen into a hurricane in the coming days.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported that Erin, the fifth named storm of the hurricane season in the Atlantic, has maximum sustained winds of 70 miles per hour. It is predicted that by Friday it will become a hurricane, and by the weekend, it could reach Category 3.
According to data from the private meteorological agency AccuWeather, Erin could become a powerful Category 4 hurricane, moving through the warm waters of the Atlantic. Warnings for the storm have also been issued for Anguilla, Barbados, St. Martin, and other islands.
The region is expected to receive up to 4 inches of rain, and in some areas - up to 6 inches, which could lead to significant flooding due to possible flash floods. The NHC noted that there is uncertainty regarding the impact of Erin on the Bahamas and the southeastern coast of the U.S.
Erin formed from a group of tropical waves that emerged near the coast of Africa. As a result of heavy rains in Cabo Verde, at least six people have died.
