Meeting of Trump and Putin Opens Path to Negotiations

On August 15, 2025, during a meeting in Alaska, U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will discuss the possibilities of achieving peace in Ukraine. German Chancellor Friedrich Merkel called on Putin to seriously consider Trump's proposal for negotiations without preconditions.
Merkel noted that after three and a half years of conflict in Ukraine, Russia has the opportunity to agree to a ceasefire. He emphasized the importance of the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the upcoming summit, where issues of security and territorial sovereignty must be discussed.
Zelensky also expressed hope that the meeting will open the way to a "just peace" and substantive trilateral negotiations between Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S. He stated that Ukraine needs clear security guarantees.
During this week, Zelensky met with European leaders and discussed the possibility of further negotiations after the summit in Alaska.
