Volkswagen introduces a subscription for enhancing the power of cars
- VW promotes a subscription for additional power for the electric ID.3 cars.
- Customers can choose different subscription options depending on the term.
- Criticism from consumers regarding the necessity to pay for the car's functions.
The German automaker Volkswagen (VW) has launched a new subscription for customers in Great Britain, allowing them to enhance the power of the electric ID.3 series cars. Owners of eligible models can pay extra to activate the full power of the engine.
According to the information, the subscription for "additional power" costs £16.50 per month, £165 per year, or £649 for a long-term subscription that remains with the car upon its resale. The company noted that this "additional option" gives customers the ability to obtain a "sportier" driving experience without the necessity to pay a higher initial price.
VW clarified that similar proposals are not new to the market, as other manufacturers, such as BMW and Mercedes, have also introduced similar subscriptions for various functions of their vehicles. However, many consumers express dissatisfaction with the need to pay for features that are already present in the car.
According to a survey by S&P Global, the percentage of consumers willing to pay for subscriptions for automotive functions decreased from 86% in 2024 to 68% in 2025. Noting this, the subscription market is generally growing, and forecasts indicate that by 2028, the global subscription economy will reach nearly $1 trillion (£740 billion).
