RAF Fighters Intercepted a Civilian Flight in England
- The sound explosion was recorded in southeastern England.
- RAF intercepted a civilian aircraft that had lost contact.
- The aircraft safely landed at Stansted Airport.
On September 15, 2025, residents of southeastern England reported sounds resembling an explosion after RAF fighters were dispatched to intercept a civilian aircraft.
Three Typhoon fighters from the RAF Coningsby base in Lincolnshire were scrambled into the air to check on an aircraft that was not maintaining contact with air traffic control. The plane, which was coming from Nice, France, was safely escorted to Stansted Airport.
The sound that residents heard was a result of the aircraft exceeding the speed of sound, reaching nearly 761 miles per hour (1225 km/h) at ground level. This creates shock waves that produce a characteristic sound.
Residents of Essex, Cambridgeshire, Sussex, and parts of London reported a loud noise that, according to them, resembled an explosion or a strong bang.
