The biodiesel production plant is closing through an agreement with the USA
- The closure of the Vivergo Fuels plant will lead to the loss of 160 jobs.
- The production of biodiesel is considered a strategic asset for Great Britain.
- The government has withdrawn from financing, focusing instead on other sectors of the economy.
The largest biodiesel production plant in Great Britain, Vivergo Fuels, located in Hull, has announced its closure following the government's withdrawal of financial support. This situation arose from an agreement between the government of Great Britain and the USA, which imposed a 19% tariff on the import of American biodiesel. As a result of this decision, 160 workers at the plant will lose their jobs.
The government stated that it has taken this decision in national interests, focusing on preserving jobs in such sectors as the automotive industry and aerospace. Representatives of Vivergo emphasized that their plant is a key national asset, capable of producing up to 420 million liters of biodiesel annually from 4,000 farmers. They also noted that the closure of the plant will have serious consequences for suppliers, including farmers and hauliers.
Vivergo's director, Ben Hakett, called the government's decision "a flagrant act of economic self-sabotage," which will lead to the loss of thousands of jobs. He reported that the company sought to avoid closure, but without government support, this became impossible.
Representatives of the farmers' association also expressed concern about the consequences of the plant's closure for the region, as it would destroy an important market for their products. The closure of Vivergo will affect not only the workers but also thousands of people who depend on this supplier.
