Court Allows Trump to Continue Mass Layoffs at CFPB
- The court has allowed the Trump administration to continue layoffs at the CFPB.
- The ruling is not final and may be appealed.
- CFPB returned over $21 billion to consumers since its inception.
The federal appeals court has permitted the Trump administration to resume layoffs at the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection (CFPB), upholding the ruling that a lower court lacked jurisdiction for temporary blocking mass layoffs.
The court's ruling does not preclude attorneys representing CFPB employees and consumer groups from filing an appeal to the full bench of the D.C. Circuit Court.
This ruling is yet another chapter in the legal battle over the CFPB, as the Trump administration aims to lay off 1,500 of the 1,700 agency employees. CFPB has returned to consumers in the U.S. over $21 billion since its inception.
Russell Vought, the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, was appointed as acting director of the CFPB this summer. The Trump administration has yet to nominate a permanent candidate for this position following the resignation of the previous candidate in June.
The district court, appointed by Trump, supported the administration, stating that the lower court "lacked jurisdiction to consider claims related to job loss." Judge Nina Pillard, appointed by Obama, in her dissent stated that the lower court acted improperly, blocking efforts by the administration to dismantle the CFPB.
Senator Elizabeth Warren, who played a key role in establishing the CFPB, stated that the court's ruling ignores the administration's attempts to dismantle the agency, which has helped millions of families across the country.
