LIVERPOOL, England — Players and officials of Liverpool paid a heartfelt tribute to Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva during the first official match in England following their tragic passing. This took place on September 15, 2025, before the Premier League match against Bournemouth.
Before the start of the game, the players raised placards, forming the inscriptions "DJ20" and "AS30" during the moment of silence in honor of the Portuguese footballers who perished in a car accident in Spain. The Liverpool players stood arm in arm, invoking the central circle.
The players of both teams, as well as Liverpool's coach Arne Slot and his staff, wore black armbands. During the tribute, the song "You'll Never Walk Alone" played, and the fans displayed banners and flags in honor of Jota. A large screen featured images of Jota and Silva.
Diogo Jota played for Liverpool for five seasons, winning the Premier League, the FA Cup, and the League Cup. The club decided to retire his number 20. At Anfield, a permanent memorial will be established in the form of a sculpture in honor of Jota.
