On September 15, 2025, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell was indicted for corruption following a lengthy investigation. A federal court in the Eastern District of Louisiana issued the indictment, which includes charges of fraud, obstruction of justice, and providing false testimony before a grand jury.

Along with the indictment, Cantrell is suspected of having ties to police officer Jefferson Polom Vappii II, with whom she allegedly used her official position to facilitate fraud with city funds. Cantrell's attorney stated that they have not yet been made aware of the indictment and cannot comment on the situation.

LaToya Cantrell, the first woman to hold the position of mayor of New Orleans, will remain in her position until January. Her second term has been marked by conflicts with members of the city council, as well as an attempted recall in 2022. Since the moment of the indictment, her public profile has significantly diminished, and support has waned.

Currently, Cantrell is facing challenges, as the indictment, in her words, is connected to racial discrimination and political attacks against her.
