On September 15, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a meeting at the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska. This summit became the first in four years and took place in a "three on three" format. At the meeting, besides Trump, were present U.S. Secretary of State Mark Rubio and the special representative for the Near East Steve Vitkoff. Putin was accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov and his deputy Yuri Ushakov.
This meeting has significant importance in the context of the war in Ukraine, as the U.S. seeks to achieve a ceasefire. Previously, Trump expressed hope that the summit would lead to a subsequent meeting in which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky would participate.
Prior to the summit, two B-2 bombers were delivered to Alaska, symbolizing U.S. military power. These aircraft can perform missions using conventional as well as nuclear munitions.
