New changes to the student loan forgiveness program
- New rules could exclude employees of organizations that engage in illegal activities.
- Critics believe that the changes are a political maneuver.
- The public has the opportunity to comment on the new proposals for a period of 30 days.
Washington — The Trump Administration has introduced new rules that limit the student loan forgiveness program (PSLF), which was created in 2007 to incentivize graduates of universities to work in public and non-profit organizations. This program allows borrowers to receive forgiveness after 10 years of work in such positions.
Along with the new proposals, employees of organizations that, according to the Department of Education, engage in "substantially illegal actions" could be excluded from the program. This may apply to organizations that provide medical services to transgender youth or violate immigration laws.
The changes were initiated by President Trump in February when he signed an order directing the Department of Education to develop new regulations to limit the program. These rules have not yet taken effect, but their publication in the Federal Register is approaching reality.
Critics consider these changes an attempt at political maneuvering, which could affect millions of borrowers, forcing them to seek new jobs if their organization no longer meets the new criteria. They assert that the Department of Education does not have the right to change the definition of a qualified employer, which was previously established by law.
The public has the opportunity to express their opinion on these proposals for 30 days before they can potentially be finalized. If the changes take effect, they will be in effect from July 2026.
