Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is visiting Mexico in Veracruz for a meeting with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, a senior official reported on Friday.
This meeting will take place on the sidelines of discussions regarding U.S. tariffs and preparations for a review of the agreement on free trade between the three countries in the coming year.
The official confirmed the visit on the condition of anonymity, as they were not authorized to speak publicly about it. Earlier this month, Carney sent the ministers of foreign affairs and finance to meet with Sheinbaum to promote bilateral trade diversity.
Sheinbaum visited Canada during the G7 summit in Alberta in June. According to the agreement, the U.S., Mexico, and Canada will have certain exemptions from tariffs, provided that goods meet the terms of the 2020 agreement, made during Donald Trump's presidency.
However, for some products, such as steel and aluminum, special tariffs still apply, which affect the economy. Mexico is the third-largest trading partner for Canada after the U.S. and China, while Canada was the fifth largest trading partner for Mexico in 2024.
