The University of Michigan has received serious sanctions from the NCAA due to a scandal involving signal stealing, which has been ongoing for two years. A fine of $20 million has been imposed on the football program, and head coach Sharon Moore has been suspended for three games.

The scandal, which began in 2023, is linked to a former Michigan staff member, Connor Stallions, who organized a network of observers that recorded games from opposing teams' sidelines. The NCAA identified 56 instances of illegal surveillance over 13 future opponents spanning three seasons (2021-2023).

Stallions, who gathered the team of observers, received data on signals that allowed Michigan to gain a competitive edge. Following the identification of violations, the NCAA imposed a lifetime ban on him from participating in any sports activities for life, while the former coach Jim Harbaugh received a 10-year ban.

Moore, who also received a two-year ban, will miss games against Central Michigan and Nebraska, as well as the first match of the 2026 season. The club is looking for a replacement for Moore before the start of the new season, which begins on August 30 with a match against New Mexico.

Among the potential candidates for Moore's replacement are assistant coach Biff Poggi, who has collegiate coaching experience, as well as Chip Lindley, a coordinator for the defense, and Don "Winka" Martindale. The university needs to appoint a new coach as soon as possible to ensure the stability of the team during the challenges of the new season.
