Explosion at U.S. Steel plant results in two fatalities

  • Explosion at U.S. Steel plant resulted in two fatalities
  • The cause of the explosion is related to the malfunction of a gas pipeline
  • The plant in Clairton is the largest coke manufacturing facility in North America

In HARRISBURG, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection reported that a planned technical inspection at the U.S. Steel coke processing plant located near Pittsburgh may have led to the explosion, which took the lives of two individuals and sent 10 to the hospital. The company reported this on Friday.

U.S. Steel stated that it received this information as a result of reviewing video recordings and interviewing workers.

The explosion occurred while workers were cleaning a gas pipeline as part of a planned technical inspection. The incident happened near the ovens, where the coal is heated to 1200 degrees Fahrenheit (648.89 degrees Celsius) to produce coke, a crucial component in steel production. The product of coal processing is hot gas, known as coke oven gas, which consists of a mixture of methane, hydrogen gas, and carbon monoxide.

At U.S. Steel, it was reported that pressure had increased in the pipeline, which led to its rupture, and gas filled the area, which in turn caused the explosion upon contact with an ignition source. The reasons for the increased pressure in the pipeline and the ignition source have not yet been established. The investigation into the incident has begun, and the company promises to provide more information in the future.

The union representing the metallurgical workers, which represents the deceased and injured in the explosion, has not commented on the situation. The explosion occurred at the large facility located along the Monongahela River in Clairton, which is considered the largest coke manufacturing facility in North America. This plant, along with a domestic steel mill that operates in the vicinity, is one of the few integrated steelmaking facilities that remain in the U.S.

The explosion was accompanied by a strong blast that lifted a black cloud into the air, shook the ground, and was felt at a distance of up to a mile. Rescuers found two missing workers after several hours: one was found dead, while the other was alive under the burning rubble.

The plant in Clairton is over 110 years old. The Japanese company Nippon Steel completed its acquisition of U.S. Steel in June, receiving approval from President Donald Trump, who praised his predecessor Joe Biden's decision to block the deal. To change Trump's mind, Nippon Steel increased its investment in the old U.S. Steel plants and granted the federal government the right to control certain issues related to domestic steel production.
