Bob Simpson, former captain and coach of the Australian national cricket team, passed away in Sydney at the age of 89. His death was confirmed by Cricket Australia on August 16, 2025.

Simpson had a significant impact on Australian cricket for more than four decades, serving as a player, captain, and coach. He made his test debut in 1957 and played for Australia until 1978, participating in 62 test matches.

Throughout his career, Simpson amassed 4869 test runs, including 10 centuries and 27 half-centuries, and also took 71 wickets. His performances on the field included notable moments, such as scoring 311 runs in a test against England in 1964, when he became only the second Australian to achieve a triple century.

After retiring from playing, he became the coach of the Australian team from 1986 to 1996, during which time the team won the World Cup in 1987 and returned to dominance in cricket. Prime Minister of Australia Anthony Albanese expressed his condolences, noting Simpson's contribution to the development of Australian cricket.

Simpson was also a member of the MCC committee, which rewrote the laws of cricket in the late 1990s. In 2013, he was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame.
