President of the USA Donald Trump stated that his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping confirmed to him that China would not invade Taiwan while Trump remains in office.
These comments were made by Trump during an interview on Fox News ahead of negotiations with President of Russia Vladimir Putin regarding the invasion of Moscow into Ukraine.
"I will tell you, you know, you have a very similar question with President Xi regarding China and Taiwan, but I don’t believe that this will happen while I am here. We will see," Trump said during an interview on the Fox News program "Special Report".
"He told me: 'I would never do this while you are president.' President Xi told me this, and I replied: 'Well, I appreciate that,' but he also added: 'I am very patient, and China is very patient,'" Trump noted.
Xi and Trump held their first confirmed phone call during the second presidential term of Trump in January. Trump also stated that he spoke with him in April, but did not specify when this occurred.
China considers Taiwan its territory and insists on "unification" with the democratic and separate governed island, which will be necessary. Taiwan resolutely protests against China's pretensions to sovereignty.
Although Washington is the main supplier of arms to Taiwan and the international community, the USA, like many countries, does not have official diplomatic relations with the island.
The Chinese embassy in Washington did not respond to a request for comment at the time of publication.
