The Sorority Recruitment Process Changes Through TikTok
- Sororities in Alabama are limiting publicity during the recruitment period.
- Restrictions on publicity are related to the mental health of participants.
- The recruitment process is expensive and emotionally taxing.
Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Kylin Darnell became a popular TikTok creator, showcasing the ritual recruitment process in sororities. However, now as a 21-year-old student, she chooses to limit her life on social media.
Following negative reactions to her content, which shows life in Zeta Tau Alpha at the University of Alabama, Darnell decided to limit her online activity, as it started to impact her mental health.
Many sororities have also established unofficial bans on interacting with the press and social media during the recruitment week, as this protects new members from hazing.
Recruitment usually lasts 10 days, during which girls participate in various events, adhering to strict rules regarding clothing and behavior. Participation in this process can cost thousands of dollars, and each of the 2,600 participants in this year's recruitment pays $550.
The risk associated with this process has led to the emergence of consultants who help girls navigate the challenges of securing a place in their desired sorority.
While recruitment can be interesting and help girls develop in their confidence, it is also an emotional strain, especially for those who feel the need to share their lives with a large audience.
Many new students received indications not to publicize about recruitment, while some, including Darnell herself, decided to ignore these bans, garnering millions of views.
