Hurricane Erin Becomes a Category Three Hurricane in the Caribbean Sea

On Saturday, September 16, 2025, Hurricane Erin became a category three hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center in the U.S. At that moment, it was located about 170 miles (275 km) northeast of Anguilla, with maximum sustained winds of up to 120 miles per hour (195 km/h). The hurricane is moving to the northwest at a speed of 20 miles per hour (31 km/h).
It is expected that the hurricane will not reach land, but strong winds are already affecting neighboring islands. Forecasts indicate that Erin will likely move away from the continental U.S.
Earlier, on September 15, Erin was downgraded to a category two hurricane, which sparked meteorologists to predict possible intensification and shifts. Tropical storms are expected in Anguilla, Barbados, St. Martin, and other islands. It is expected that in Antigua and Barbados, there could be up to 6 inches of rain.
At this moment, Hurricane Erin is the first hurricane of this season in the Atlantic. It is expected that it will be upgraded to a powerful category four hurricane when it passes through warmer waters of the open Atlantic.
In addition, the U.S. government has deployed over 200 employees from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to Puerto Rico as a precautionary measure. 367 shelters have been opened, ready for use. In many areas, several community shelters have also been prepared.
