During the opening of the 2025-2026 Premier League season, the match between Liverpool and Bournemouth was suspended due to reports of racist abuse directed at Bournemouth's forward Antoine Semenyano. This occurred in the 29th minute of the game when referee Anton Taylor stopped the game to discuss the incident with the coaches and captains of the teams.
Semenyano, a 25-year-old player, had already distinguished himself with two goals, allowing Bournemouth to equalize. However, the situation regarding racism became the main topic of discussion after the match. Bournemouth's captain Adam Smith expressed his outrage, stating that such incidents should not occur in today's society.
The Merseyside Police confirmed that a 47-year-old man was removed from the stands, and an investigation has been launched. Liverpool and Bournemouth expressed their support for Semenyano, as well as their readiness to cooperate with the police in investigating this incident.
The Premier League confirmed that this issue will be resolved within the framework of their anti-discrimination protocol. Meanwhile, Semenyano shared on social media his experience, asking: "When will this end?".
