Discussing Security Guarantees for Ukraine in NATO Format

  • Trump and Putin discussed security guarantees for Ukraine.
  • Possible territorial changes in Ukraine are being discussed.
  • Security guarantees will not be tied to NATO.

This is reported by Ukrayinska Pravda, Interfax Ukraine.

U.S. President Donald Trump and European allies discussed the issue of providing security guarantees for Ukraine, which recall Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, but without NATO's involvement.

According to an unnamed European official, during the talks following Trump's negotiations with the Kremlin president in Algiers, a possible provision of such guarantees as part of a potential peace agreement was discussed. Meanwhile, the details of the proposal remain unknown.

Trump noted that during the talks with Putin, possible territorial changes in Ukraine were discussed and significant progress has already been achieved. He emphasized that any further decisions depend on Ukraine. "Ukraine may have to agree to this. Possibly, they will say no," he added.

Earlier, Trump also mentioned that the U.S., together with Europe, could provide Ukraine with security guarantees, but not in the NATO format. He stated that the issue of territorial adjustments would be on the agenda of the next meeting in Algiers.
