GILGIT, Pakistan (AP) — A rescue team from Pakistan and Nepal has recovered the body of a Chinese mountaineer who died on K2, the second highest peak in the world, a regional government official reported on Saturday.
Faizullah Faraq, a spokesperson for the Gilgit-Baltistan government, stated that the body of Guan Ziyin was evacuated by helicopter from the base camp of K2 after the climbers' team initiated their descent.
Ziyin died in the fall when he was hit by falling rock during the descent, the day after he reached the summit with a group of friends.
Faraq reported that the body was transported to the hospital in the town of Skardu and will be sent to Islamabad after coordination with his family and Chinese officials.
Karar Haidri, vice-president of the Pakistan Alpine Club, noted that the body was recovered after several days of searching, during which one of the climbers sustained an injury and was evacuated by helicopter.
K2, which rises to 8,611 meters (28,251 feet) above sea level, is considered one of the most difficult and dangerous peaks for climbing in the world.
The death of Ziyin occurred just days after the German climber and Olympic champion Laura Dahlmeier died while attempting to scale another peak in the region.
