The Mayor of New Orleans is Accused of Fraud and Corruption

  • Latoya Cantrell is accused of fraud and corruption.
  • She and her security detail allegedly used public funds for personal purposes.
  • In the event of a verdict, they face hefty fines and imprisonment.

The Mayor of New Orleans, Latoya Cantrell, has been accused of fraud, corruption, and misconduct through allegations that she used public funds to support romantic relationships with her security officer, Jefferson Vappie. According to prosecutors, Cantrell and Vappie had "personal, intimate relationships" since July 2021, when Vappie was part of her security team.

Pairing the accusations is the claim that during 14 separate instances involving both international and domestic trips, they confirmed that Vappie performed official duties while actually engaging in personal matters. Prosecutors noted that to maintain their communications, they used the WhatsApp platform with an auto-delete function.

According to the prosecutors, Cantrell and Vappie had extensive discussions about positions funded by the city budget, totaling more than $70,000. Cantrell stated that she needed security due to the COVID pandemic, while prosecutors challenge this version, providing examples when she traveled without security.

In the case of being found guilty, Cantrell and Vappie could face many years in prison and fines up to $250,000. Cantrell, who is the first female mayor in the 300-year history of the city, has held this position since 2018 and intends to remain in office until January 2025.
