The President of the USA, Donald Trump, informed European leaders and the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, that the Russian leader, Vladimir Putin, continues to demand the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the entire territory of Donetsk and Luhansk regions in eastern Ukraine.
Trump noted that while Ukraine wants to decide what to do with its territory, Putin's position has not changed – he still wants Kyiv to hand over control over all of Donbas.
According to Bloomberg sources, Russia is ready to withdraw from pretenses in the territories of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions, which it currently does not control, effectively freezing the front line.
Trump also indicated that he could help ensure Ukraine's security without involving NATO, and expressed the opinion that Putin could agree to this.
Some European officials express concern that Trump may pressure Zelensky to achieve territorial concessions in exchange for a peace agreement.
Trump held a preliminary conversation with Zelensky, and then with European leaders on August 16, after a meeting with Putin. Zelensky confirmed that on August 18, he will head to Washington for negotiations with Trump.
However, according to information from the Russian news agency TASS, Trump and Putin did not discuss the outcome of the trilateral summit involving Zelensky.
Putin's press secretary, Yuri Ushakov, confirmed that the topic of the trilateral meeting was not raised, and it is unclear when the next meeting between Putin and Trump will take place.
