At the summit, between the presidents of the USA, Donald Trump, and Russia, Vladimir Putin, no strategic agreements were reached, which exacerbated the situation in Ukraine. After the Ukrainians watched the meeting unfold, they were left pondering the possible consequences for the war.
Putin received a warm welcome in the USA, which became a symbol of his return to the international diplomatic arena. American military officials rolled out the red carpet, while Trump and Putin exchanged friendly smiles. Some Ukrainians perceived this as a legitimization of aggression, corresponding to the countless victims in Ukraine.
Experts point out that the mutual economic interests of Trump and Putin, particularly in the area of natural resources, take precedence. According to the former deputy secretary general of NATO, Stefan Babst, Trump has already given Putin a "green light" for the continuation of military actions in Ukraine.
After the summit, European politicians called for independent actions, emphasizing the necessity of military support for Ukraine and strengthening sanctions against Russia. German deputy Marija-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann stated that Europe must act independently, although hope for Trump's support is fading.
Other German politicians also noted that Putin emerged from the summit as the victor, receiving diplomatic support from the USA and avoiding new sanctions. They called for strengthening military support for Ukraine without relying on the USA.
