On August 16, 2025, Russian forces, for the first time in a long while, conducted a mechanized assault on Kup'yansk in the Kharkiv region. The attackers captured two tanks, three armored fighting vehicles, and nearly 40 servicemen, attempting to break through the Ukrainian defense on the left bank of the Oskil River.
The successful actions of Ukrainian units, including the 429th separate unmanned unit "Achilles", the 116th separate mechanized brigade, and the 15th brigade of operational designation "Kara-Dag", allowed them to halt the assault. As a result of the counterattack, all five Russian armored vehicles were destroyed, including one tank and two armored fighting vehicles MT-LB.
The commander of the 1st battalion of the "Achilles" regiment, Anton Shmagailo, noted that in the last two months, the enemy has been trying to break through the Ukrainian positions. They attempted to conduct a local blitzkrieg, relying on the element of surprise.
According to the data from the Operational-Strategic Group "Dnipro", on September 15-16, Russian forces suffered significant losses, exceeding 1,000 soldiers. On the front, nearly 70 combat engagements were recorded.
