Australia achieved a stunning comeback over South Africa with a score of 38-22 in the opening match of the Rugby Championship, marking the first time they have won at Ellis Park since 1963. The match took place at Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg on September 16, 2025.
The South African team quickly took the lead, scoring 22 points in the first 17 minutes with three tries. However, the Australians did not lose focus and, despite the difficult start, managed to level the score, having scored six tries in a row, which allowed them to secure the win.
The captain of the team, Harry Wilson, scored two tries, and they also saw tries from Dilan Peach, Joseph Sauli, Max Jorgensen, and Tom Wright. Australia has not won on South African soil since 2011, and they had not won at Ellis Park since 1963. This victory became a milestone for coach Joe Schmidt in his 18-month career at the helm.
In the first half, South Africa led 22-5, but the Australians did not stop at this achievement and continued to showcase a stunning level of play in the second half of the match, solidifying their advantage.
