Iles was born in Germany but lived in Natchez, Mississippi from the age of three. Many of his works, including the trilogy "Natchez Burning," explore themes of race and class in the southern United States during the 1960s.

The author remained private about his health until he completed his final novel "Southern Man," which was released in 2024. Conaway described Iles as "warm, cheerful, brave, and absolutely unique" in personality.

In 2011, Iles survived a serious accident, as a result of which he had to amputate part of his leg, but he was able to recover.

He also performed with the rock band Rock Bottom Remainders alongside such famous authors as Stephen King and Amy Tan.
