Trump Plans to End UN Peacekeeping Mission in Lebanon

  • The USA plans to close the UNIFIL operation in Lebanon.
  • European countries are speaking out against the swift termination of the mission.
  • Lebanese officials support the presence of UN peacekeepers.

The future of UN peacekeepers in Lebanon has raised tensions between the United States and their European allies. This issue affects security in the Middle East and has become a new sticking point in relations between the USA and such countries as France, Great Britain, and Italy.

The crux of the matter lies in the operation of UNIFIL, whose mandate ends in September and requires an extension through the UN Security Council. The operation was created to monitor the withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon after the invasion in 1978, and its mandate was expanded after the 2006 war between Israel and the Hezbollah militia.

Multinational forces have played an important role in monitoring the security situation in southern Lebanon for decades. However, the operation has faced criticism from both sides, including significant concerns from American lawmakers, who argue that it occupies important positions in the Trump administration.

The Trump administration is pushing to close UNIFIL, arguing that the operation is an ineffective use of money that merely delays the flow of Hezbollah and undermines control of the Lebanese army. Minister of Foreign Affairs Mark Rubio signed a plan that anticipates the end of the mission in six months, following a significant reduction in funding from the USA.

European countries, including France and Italy, have spoken out against the rapid termination of UNIFIL. They have advocated for an annual extension of the mandate with a clearer timeline for its conclusion. Europeans believe that premature termination of the mission could create a vacuum that Hezbollah could easily fill.

Lebanese officials have called for the peacekeepers to remain, as their army is not adequately prepared for full territorial patrols. General in command Khalil Helou stated that if UNIFIL's mandate is rapidly concluded, it could negatively impact the stability of the country.

A UN representative emphasized the importance of the presence of peacekeepers for regional stability. They continue to identify illegal arms in Lebanon, which underscores the necessity of their mission.
