  • The Hong Kong government expressed disappointment over the granting of residency to Hui.

Ted Hui, a former member of the Hong Kong legislature, received residency in Australia. He announced this on his social media account, urging the Australian government to do more to support other activists who remain in exile.

Hui, who became a prominent critic of the Hong Kong and Beijing authorities, fled the city four years ago. He arrived in Europe in December 2020, and in February 2021, he received a special exemption for travel to Australia during COVID-19 restrictions.

At the beginning of 2022, he was sentenced in absentia in Hong Kong to three years in prison for participating in protests. On Saturday, September 17, 2025, Hui announced that he received formal confirmation from the Australian Department of Home Affairs granting him residency.

Hui expressed gratitude to the Australian government for recognizing his need for protection. He also noted that his residency extends to his family, including his wife, children, and parents. Hui emphasized that he and his family intend to give back to Australia through their work and community involvement.

In his statements, Hui urged the Australian government not to forget about other activists who still remain in exile in Hong Kong, including Jimmy Lai, who has faced persecution since 2020. Hui stated that Australia’s position has international significance.

The Hong Kong government, in turn, did not leave this incident without a response. A government representative stated that countries that harbor criminals demonstrate negligence towards the laws of Hong Kong.

The Australian Minister for Home Affairs, Clare O'Neil, previously expressed concern regarding the treatment of activists living under the regime, emphasizing the importance of freedom of speech and assembly for democracy.
