Chicago (AP) — Khamzat Chimaev continued his dominating series in the UFC, winning the middleweight championship title by defeating Drikus Du Plessis by unanimous decision at UFC 319 on Saturday evening.
Chimaev (15-0) started the fight with a tactical approach, securing a takedown on Du Plessis (23-3) within the first few seconds. He controlled the situation on the ground for most of the first round, while Du Plessis struggled to escape serious difficulties.
In the second and third rounds, Chimaev continued to dominate, delivering strikes while Du Plessis found himself on the canvas. Chimaev maintained the lead in the fourth round, while Du Plessis tried to take the initiative in the fifth round, but it was too late.
All three judges scored the fight 50-44 in favor of Chimaev. This return of the UFC to Chicago after six years became the most attended event at the United Center.
The main card also featured two spectacular knockouts from Carlos Prates and Leron Merphy in the first round.
