During a conversation with European leaders, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed the opinion that a peace agreement could be achieved if Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky agreed to cede the Donbas region, which Russian troops have been unable to capture despite three years of military action. This was reported by New York Times.
According to information obtained from two sources, Putin demanded that Ukraine withdraw its troops from Donbas, which consists of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, as a condition for ending the war, but Trump insisted that the front be frozen in other areas.
While Luhansk is mostly under Russian control, Ukraine still holds key parts of Donetsk, including the cities of Kramatorsk and Sloviansk. In these positions, a fierce battle is taking place, which has cost thousands of lives.
Trump also appeared supportive and relaxed after the meeting with Putin at the military base in Anchorage, Alaska, according to participants in the conversation with European leaders. He mentioned that he had been working tirelessly for 24 hours straight.
In the event that the three-party negotiations do not yield progress, Trump expressed readiness to lift the threat of immediate sanctions against Russia.
