On Sunday morning, September 17, 2025, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 struck the central island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. This underwater earthquake occurred at a depth of 1 km and was felt in many surrounding areas, including the vicinity of Poso.

According to the National Disaster Management Agency of Indonesia, 29 people were injured, two of whom are in critical condition. Most of the injured were present at a church service where significant damage was reported.

Videos show how congregants were singing in church when the tremors began. People started to panic and run for the exits. One of the videos also recorded intense tremors in a grocery store.

After the main tremor, which struck 15 km to the south of Poso, at least 15 aftershocks were recorded. The authorities did not issue any prior warnings about the tremors. The damage was reported by one church, while construction sites, which were undergoing repairs, collapsed, trapping several people under the rubble.

Indonesia is located on the "Pacific Ring of Fire", where different tectonic plates meet, causing frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
