Mayors of cities reduce crime, disregarding Trump's intrusion
- Mayors of cities are banning Trump's words about crime.
- Crime is decreasing thanks to local programs.
- Trump calls for intervention, but this provokes criticism.
Statements by President Donald Trump about crime in cities run by Black mayors have sparked condemnation among local leaders. Trump asserts that these cities are "criminal," and calls for federal intervention, but many mayors counter this, citing facts about the declining crime rate.
Mayors who are part of the African American mayors association note that in their cities, there is a significant reduction in crime. For example, in Baltimore, there has been a historic decrease in homicides and violent crime, which is attributed to the implementation of a program to prevent crime, developed in 2021.
Mayor of Chicago Brandon Johnson also emphasized that in his city, homicides have decreased by more than 30% over the past year. In Los Angeles, homicides fell by 14% between 2023 and 2024. These changes occurred thanks to the efforts of local organizations and programs aimed at improving safety in communities.
Regardless of this, Trump continues to assert that crime in these cities is a serious problem. He recently directed the National Guard to Washington, which drew criticism from mayors, who believe that such actions do not promote safety, but rather can worsen the situation.
Mayor of Savannah Van Johnson noted that such actions by the administration do not support real efforts to improve safety through investments in communities and support programs. He stressed that federal military intervention is not what is needed to solve the problem of crime.
