Rubio Talks About the Possibility of a Peace Agreement Between Ukraine and Russia
- Marco Rubio emphasized the importance of compromises for a peace agreement.
- Zelensky is planning a meeting with Trump and European leaders.
- Sanctions against Russia may not be effective without cooperation.
This is reported by NBC News, RBC Ukraine.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that a temporary agreement on a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia "is not off the table," although leaders of the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia are agreeing that the best outcome would be a peace agreement that would ultimately end the war.
Rubio noted that all parties agree that the best way to end the conflict is a comprehensive peace agreement. He emphasized that while Russia is currently not agreeing to a ceasefire, the U.S. will continue to try to achieve this.
Rubio's statements came after a meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Algiers. President Trump stated that "no agreement will be made until there is an agreement," emphasizing the necessity of subsequent steps.
Rubio also stressed that to achieve a peace agreement, it is necessary for both sides to give something up. He pointed out the importance of security guarantees for Ukraine and territorial concessions as part of the negotiations.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky planned to visit the White House to discuss the situation with Trump and European leaders. Rubio noted that for Russia to achieve peace, it must recognize Ukraine's sovereignty and its right to self-defense.
