Spain intensifies fight against wildfires during heatwave

Spain is intensifying its fight against wildfires, deploying an additional 500 troops to support firefighting operations amid a severe heatwave. Over the weekend, 20 major fires were reported in the country, particularly in the northwestern region of Galicia, where flames have destroyed over 115,000 hectares of forest.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez reported that the total number of troops involved in the fight against wildfires has reached 1,900. Temperatures in some regions may reach 45 degrees Celsius. The government has urged people to limit outdoor activities and wear masks due to smoke.
In Galicia, the situation remains critical, as flames threaten residential areas. Local residents are taking measures to combat the fire themselves, using water from nearby sources, as electricity for pumps is unavailable.
In neighboring Portugal, the fight against large-scale wildfires continues, where this year nearly 155,000 hectares of forest have burned, which is three times the average for this period over the last few years.
