On August 17, 2025, the 28th classic race took place in Hamburg, where Irishman Rory Townsend (Q36.5) claimed victory. He finished first after 207.4 km, despite the fact that his lead was not enough to hold off the sprinters in the final meters of the race. Following him were Belgian Arnaud De Lie (Lotto) and Frenchman Paul Magnier (Soudal Quick-Step), who outpaced Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) in the sprint.
Townsend, a 30-year-old champion of Ireland, had previously never won a race in the World Tour framework. He had been in the lead for almost 200 km alongside such riders as Nélson Oliveira (Movistar) and Jhoan Jacob (Groupama-FDJ). In the final of the race, a group of thirty riders tried to catch the leaders, but could only partially close the gap.
Race Details
At the 15-kilometer mark to the finish, a significant reduction occurred in the group of participants, which led to a tense battle. The riders who remained ahead tried to maintain their advantage, but at the finish, Townsend proved to be the strongest. His victory was unexpected, as he was not the favorite in the race, but the change in the dynamics of the race allowed him to seize the opportunity.
