Mascots Use Various Methods to Combat Heat
- Mascots use hot water and ice for refreshing
- Regular breaks and hydration are critically important
- Modern costumes have ventilation for moisture retention
Philadelphia — The mascot Philly Fanatic has a secret to surviving the scorching summer days. Mixing hot water and ice not only serves as a distraction but also helps maintain freshness.
Tom Bergoin, who brings the Fanatic to life, stresses that this is not for hydration. During performances, he sweats heavily, which is why he previously used tools like Lizol or Febreze to control odors.
Today, many mascots live on a mixture of hot water and ice to refresh themselves during their costume obligations. "This is popular in the world of mascots," notes Bergoin.
Methods for Moisture Retention During Performance
Mascots like Philly Fanatic, Fredbird, and Klark the Cub require regular breaks to avoid overheating. They use cooling materials, ventilation, and constant moisture release.
Mitchell Maxine, head of BAM Mascots, emphasizes the importance of maintaining hydration and comfort for performers who stay in costumes. They use lightweight fabrics and built-in ventilation to improve air circulation.
Hydration Remains Key
According to Maxine, the best way to avoid overheating on scorching days is through regular breaks and hydration. "We’ve received requests for systems that allow mascots to drink water during performances," he adds.
With all new technologies, the main thing is not to forget about hydration. The Fanatic has the ability to take a break in its costume to avoid overheating, especially on hot days when the temperature exceeds 100 degrees.
This summer in Philadelphia has seen extreme situations through the heat, and many mascots receive cooling vests from fans to avoid exhaustion from the heat.
Philly Fanatic sends cooling vests and fans to help the Fanatic cope with high temperatures. However, even with all these measures, the mascot still feels the heat through constant activity during performances.
