Browns to announce starting quarterback for the beginning of the season
- Kevin Stefanski will announce the starting quarterback this week.
- Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and Dillion Gabriel are competing for the starting position.
- Shedeur Sanders risks leaving the team due to injury.
Cleveland (AP) — Head coach Kevin Stefanski is expected to announce the starting quarterback of the Cleveland Browns this week ahead of the game on September 7 against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Stefanski noted that he wants to start talking with the team and the players before making a decision. The team performed well last week after defeating Philadelphia Eagles 22-13, and on Monday is returning to training.
Previously, the Browns had the last training before the final game of the preseason with the Los Angeles Rams, where the team plans to conduct regular activities, including competitive periods and situational drills.
Joe Flacco, who did not play in any of the preseason games, received most of the first-team reps during training. In his turn, Kenny Pickett is limited due to injury, while Shedeur Sanders is expected to practice through injury this week.
Stefanski expressed hope that Pickett or Sanders could return to practice this week. Dillion Gabriel, who did not play in the first game of the preseason, showed good results against the Eagles, completing 13 of 18 passes for 143 yards.
Stefanski noted that Gabriel performed well in the third down, which was important for the team. The Browns plan to keep four quarterbacks in the roster, but a decision regarding this will be made at the earliest time.
