In Ukraine, discussions regarding Donbas continue due to Putin's demands

  • Putin demands that Ukraine withdraw from Donbas for peace
  • Zelensky refuses to give up territorial concessions
  • Donbas remains a strategically important region for Ukraine

In Ukraine, discussions regarding the territory of Donbas continue, where Russian President Vladimir Putin demands that Ukraine withdraw from control over these regions to achieve peace. During a recent meeting with Donald Trump in Almaty, Putin put forward the demand for the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donetsk as a condition for ending the conflict.

Donbas, which encompasses Donetsk and Luhansk regions, has been the epicenter of hostilities since 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea. As of today, nearly 88% of the territory of Donbas is controlled by Russian forces. The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, categorically rejects any proposals that would envision the ceding of territories, stating that this could open the way for further Russian aggression.

Along with the evaluations, Donbas has some of the largest coal reserves in Ukraine, making the region strategically important for the energy security of the country. Currently, Ukrainian forces maintain a key defensive line in Donbas, which has become an important barrier against Russian offensive actions.

Although Putin claims readiness to solidify the front in the southern regions, such as Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, his main demands remain unspecified. It is noted that over the past 1000 days, Russian forces have managed to occupy less than 1% of the territory of Ukraine.
