Jasper Philipsen from the Alpecin-Deceuninck team won the first stage of Vuelta a España, which took place on September 23, 2025, in Novara, Italy. In the final sprint, he outpaced British rider Ethan Vernon from ProTeam Israel-Premier Tech.
This victory marked Philipsen's first since his triumph at the start of the Tour de France in July, after which he suffered an injury that forced him to withdraw from the competition. He successfully completed the race in 4 hours 9 minutes and 12 seconds, with Vernon finishing second, also at the same time.
Third place was claimed by Orluis Aular from Movistar. Philipsen expressed satisfaction with his victory and noted that the red jersey is a welcome bonus. "This was a great opportunity for a sprinter, and I’m glad that I seized the chance," he said.
Philipsen's victory was an important milestone, as he returned to competition after his injury, which occurred during the Tour de France. In this stage, other prominent cyclists also participated, including Tom Pidcock, who finished ninth.
The second stage of Vuelta a España will take place in the Piemont region, with a route length of 159.6 km, finishing with a climb to the ski resort of Limone-Piemonte.
