The USA Plans to Deport Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Uganda

  • Kilmar Abrego Garcia is to be deported to Uganda after rejecting an agreement regarding Costa Rica.
  • The US government is attempting to deport him again following a court ruling on his case.
  • Advocates assert that the deportation is an attempt to use him as a precedent.

The US government, under the leadership of President Donald Trump, intends to deport Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national, to Uganda. This comes after he rejected an agreement regarding the recognition of his status, under which they proposed deportation to Costa Rica in exchange for remaining in prison and recognition of his status as a convicted felon.

The proposal regarding Costa Rica was sent on Thursday, after it became known that Abrego Garcia, who has already received a potential exit under a waiver, will be released from custody in Tennessee. After rejecting the agreement, he was released on Friday, but on the same day, he was informed that he must appear at immigration authorities in Baltimore on Monday to discuss his deportation to Uganda.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia had previously experienced deportation to El Salvador, where he was placed in a detention center. Following a ruling from the US government, he was returned to the US in June, and since then, his case has been subject to litigation regarding his deportation. In 2019, the court recognized that he had "been subjected to persecution" due to his return to Salvador.

Currently, his advocates assert that deportation to Uganda is an attempt to use him to abide by the agreement regarding recognition of status, since he has no ties to this African country. They emphasize that the agreement with Costa Rica provided that he could live there legally without the threat of being returned to Salvador.

US officials believe that Abrego Garcia may be deported, especially since he entered the country illegally. Regardless of his legal status, obtained in 2019, the government is attempting to deport him again, which has caused outrage among human rights activists.
