Suspension of work on the offshore wind project in Rhode Island

  • Construction of the Revolution Wind project in Rhode Island has been halted.
  • The project is 80% complete, but it has not received approval through the national permitting process.
  • Governors of Rhode Island and Connecticut plan to challenge the administration's decision.

The Trump administration halted construction on a nearly completed offshore wind project near the shores of Rhode Island, as Bill Hata continues to criticize the American offshore wind industry, which experts consider crucial for combating climate change.

The Danish company Orsted reported that the Revolution Wind project is nearly 80% complete, with 45 out of 65 turbines already installed. Despite this, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management issued a statement indicating that the federal government must re-evaluate the project and resolve issues related to the national permitting process.

President Trump recently referred to offshore wind and solar energy as "A F E R O Y S T A L I T Y" in a social media post, suggesting he would not approve offshore wind projects.

According to experts, countries need to quickly implement renewable energy solutions to avoid the most severe consequences of climate change, such as extreme heat and droughts.

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee revealed the suspension of work, stating that together with Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont, they "will pursue all possible avenues to reverse the decision regarding the suspension of work on Revolution Wind." Construction on the project began in 2023, and it was expected to be fully operational by the end of this year.

Revolution Wind is set to be the first commercial offshore wind project in Rhode Island and Connecticut, capable of providing energy for over 350 thousand homes.

This is already the second major offshore wind project halted by the Biden administration. Earlier, work on the Empire Wind project in New York was suspended, but construction was resumed after the intervention of Senator Chuck Schumer and Governor Kathy Hochul.

The organization Green Oceans, which advocates against the offshore wind industry, supported the Bureau's decision on ocean energy management.
