Kilauea Erupts Again, 31st Time Since December

  • The Kilauea volcano erupted for the 31st time since December 2024.
  • The eruption does not threaten buildings but draws the attention of tourists.
  • Scientists are using sensors to monitor the activity of the volcano.

The Kilauea volcano in Hawaii has erupted, spewing lava 30 meters into the air and filling parts of its crater. This marks the 31st instance of an eruption since December 2024, demonstrating high activity from one of the most active volcanoes in the world.

The eruption began with a constant fountain from the southeastern vent, and after a few hours, the lava overflowed the crater. The eruption was confined to the crater, and no buildings were threatened.

Several happy local residents and visitors are observing this phenomenon in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Many others can watch online through three cameras set up by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Scientists note that the lower magma chamber beneath the crater receives magma without pressure from the Earth's surface at a speed of approximately 3.8 cubic meters per second. This results in increased pressure, which causes magma to rise to the upper chamber, where it escapes to the surface through fissures.

The Kilauea volcano, located on the island of Hawaii, is the largest in the archipelago. Its latest eruption has been part of a continuous process that began in December.

Scientists cannot precisely predict how the current eruption will conclude. They are using sensors to detect changes in the ground, which may indicate increased pressure in the magma chamber.

Monitoring of the park increased by 49% in April of this year compared to the same month in 2024, which is related to the activity of the volcano. Observing the eruption can be hazardous, so visitors are advised to maintain safety precautions.
