European postal services suspend shipments to the USA due to new tariffs

European postal services announced the suspension of shipments of many packages to the United States due to uncertainty regarding new import duties. In particular, postal services in Germany, Denmark, Sweden, and Italy suspended shipments of most goods to the USA starting September 23. France and Austria are set to join them on September 25, and the United Kingdom on September 26.

Recently, a decree was signed by US President Donald Trump that cancels the exemption from customs duties for international goods valued up to $800, which will take effect on September 29. Letters, books, gifts, and small packages valued under $100 will remain exempt from duties.

Many European postal services explain that the suspension of shipments is due to the inability to guarantee that goods will reach the USA by September 29. They indicate uncertainty regarding which specific goods fall under the new rules, as well as a lack of time for processing the newly introduced regulations.

Starting September 23, Deutsche Post and DHL Parcel in Germany announced that they can no longer accept and transport packages for business clients to the USA. The postal service and the Italian postal service also announced similar suspensions.

Postal services in the Netherlands, France, and Austria have also reported difficulties in preparing for the new customs procedures. The British postal service announced that it will suspend shipments to the USA on September 26, to allow time for the arrival of packages before the introduction of the new duties.

If no resolution is found by September 29, all members of the PostEurop association may resort to suspensions.
