Trafford Demonstrates Problems in Debut for Manchester City
- James Trafford's debut for Manchester City turned out to be unremarkable.
- Tottenham took advantage of the goalkeeper's mistakes.
- Guardiola is considering options for the goalkeeper position.
James Trafford's debut as goalkeeper for Manchester City at home against Tottenham Hotspur proved to be challenging. The 22-year-old goalkeeper made several mistakes that resulted in two goals from the opponent. The first goal was scored by Brennan Johnson, and the second – by João Palhinha, after Trafford handed the ball to the opponent in his own penalty area. The moment when Trafford, trying to clear the ball from the goal, inadvertently hit it with his hand outside the penalty area, resulted in a red card, but the referee did not deem it a foul.
Whether Trafford received a red card remains in question. According to information from BBC Sport, the refereeing committee believes there was not enough evidence to review this incident with VAR, as the goalkeeper's hands were down, and the distance to the ball was minimal.
After the match, where Manchester City lost 0-2, questions arose regarding Trafford's reliability in goal. Head coach Pep Guardiola stated that he needs to make an important decision regarding the goalkeeper position, especially since the traditional main one is Brazilian Ederson, who is recovering from an injury.
Tottenham, who also started the season with a loss, took advantage of the weakened goalkeeper to secure important three points. Players from Tottenham, including Richarlison, demonstrated good form, which raises new challenges for Guardiola in leading the team.
