Italian Deputy Prime Minister Criticizes Macron Over Sending Troops to Ukraine

  • Matteo Salvini criticizes Macron for the proposal to send troops to Ukraine.
  • France summoned the Italian ambassador over Salvini's comments.
  • Discussions of military guarantees for Ukraine continue with the active participation of Western partners.

This is reported by RBC Ukraine, Asharq Al-Awsat.

Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini sharply criticized French President Emmanuel Macron, who discussed the possibility of sending European troops to Ukraine. According to France Info, Salvini expressed opposition to the idea, stating: "Italian soldiers in Ukraine? Absolutely not. If Emmanuel Macron wants this, let him go there himself. Send a helmet, take a rifle and go to Ukraine himself."

France reacted to these comments by summoning the Italian ambassador in Paris. During the visit of Ambassador Emanuele D'Alessandro to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, they reminded him that such statements supercharge the atmosphere of distrust between the two countries.

Discussions on military guarantees for Ukraine are a key issue in negotiations regarding the end of the war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that guarantees from Western partners will be formalized within 7-10 working days.
